Sunday night, MSUM felt the effects of a campus emergency and saw the steps Campus Security takes to keep the campus safe.
Within minutes of the reported crime, a text message was sent to approximately 4,000 students, faculty and staff to inform them of the incident that was near campus. Two more text messages were sent out; one further explaining and updating the situation and the other giving the “all clear” for campus.

Columnist Tony Mansourian claims in his mockery of an editorial “Come on Democrats,” that “now is not the time for bipartisanship and subtle politicking.” Really? Is that why the column is filled to the brim with anti-conservative rhetoric and poorly conceived insults? I expected the typical amount of hypocrisy from the aforementioned writing, but seeing such conflicting statements made mere sentences apart and in such abysmal form was quite disappointing.

This article is a response to Tony Mansourian’s article “Come on Democrats” which was published in the Nov. 5, 2009 edition of The Advocate. There are few things that disturb me more than the excessive hatred expressed in Mansourian’s remarks. The main business of the article was to batter and insult Republicans in a relentless display of the fear tactics that seems to be unnervingly popular among the media today.

After last week’s shooting at Fort Hood allegedly by Maj. Malik Nidal Hasan, many online forums and bloggers have been saying things like, “I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable serving in combat with a Muslim when our job is to kill Muslims.” These bloggers argue that if we are fighting Muslims, we shouldn’t have Muslims in the military. This misperception is scary and wrong!

I’ve recently heard complaints about the students not caring about the election. It should be clear students do not grasp the scope of the issues at hand, and they simply do not have a reason to vote. However, I would like to ask the question: Whose fault is this? Some blame the students for being ignorant, while others blame the school.

With the update of The Advocate’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, hope of increasing the popularity of the newspaper with students is becoming more obtainable.
The Advocate strives for student recognition and support because the entire concept of the paper is based on providing students, faculty and staff with weekly news.

Almost a year ago exactly, liberals and progressives hooted and hollered as America elected Barack Obama to the office of president, in what many took as a resounding rejection of Bush-era neoconservative cowboy politics. One of Obama’s promises as a candidate was lasting and decisive reform of a health insurance machine that put profits before patients. This spring, he began working to this effect, amidst rousing cries of socialism, fascism and possibly lizard person-ism. The summer has now run down, and the battle for humane health care seems as deadlocked as ever. But why?

The GSA celebrates the letter to the editor by Eric Sorenson in The Advocate’s newspaper of Thursday, Oct 22. 2009. Eric has done what few people do, and that is to ask questions and seek mutual understanding through dialogue. If everyone were like Eric, we would not need to address issues such as violence and hate crimes.

Recently, one of my closest friends moved to Oregon. That got me thinking. She and I were the best of friends growing up, but due to school, work and other circumstances that disable two people from living in the same vicinity, we have been living our own individual lives for the past five years.

It has been brought to my sudden attention that we are in an economic crisis. Jobs are being lost, people are becoming unemployed, and families are struggling to live on $100,000 salaries (see CNN). While the current administration tries to fix the last administration’s blunders, I feel it is my duty and obligation to inform you and the government of some easy steps on how to fix the economy.
