NEED encourages clean campus
This week is Green Week and the Network for Environmentally Educated Dragons is becoming actively involved in trying to spread the word about keeping our community clean.
NEED is a student organization that aims to promote awareness of environmental issues on campus. Their projects include everything from overseeing residence hall and academic building recycling, hosting MSUM’s annual Earth Day celebration and participating in Minnesota school’s Cutting Carbon Program.
This week, their goal is to make their organization known on campus and get more students involved, according to Sara Bowman, a junior and secretary of NEED.
One way the group is using their first amendment rights is through a petition in support of a clean energy bill that is being pushed in congress. The bill is called the Clean Energy and American Power Act.
“We are collecting signatures from students, and then we will fax them to the Clean Energy Petition,” Bowman said.
The petition has already had a lot of success, but NEED is asking for more. If you are interested in signing the petition, they have a table set up in the CMU across from Subs & Sweets, which also includes more information on their organization and ways to get involved.
NEED invites students to join their group for the Northern Plains Powershift Summit. The event will focus on climate change, clean energy solutions, green jobs and what individuals can do today to help secure the future. The summit will take place Friday through Sunday at the Fargo Theatre and NDSU College of Business in Barry Hall. If you’re interested, you can sign up at the NEED table, or register online at http://www.northernplains.powershift09.org.
For more information on weekly Green Week events, check out NEED’s table or look for posters around campus.
“Green Week is a chance for us to tell people what our organization is about and get other students interested in green energy,” Bowman said.
